Celebrating the birth of 300 PGD Babies

 Families at the celebration day

On Sunday the 20th of November, the PGD Centre at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospital (GSTT) held a successful children’s party to celebrate the birth of more than 300 healthy babies following PGD treatment at GSTT for serious genetic conditions. The PGD treatment was carried out between late 1997, when the programme first started, and December 2010.

Many families from all over the UK who had been through PGD treatment and members of the clinical teams that cared for them attended the party at the Park Plaza Hotel in Waterloo, London.

The PGD centre has teamed up with the Woodland Trust to dedicate a tree at the Hucking Estate in Kent for the birth of each of the 330 children born after PGD. This special gift was very much appreciated by the families of the children.

The PGD service at GSTT is the largest and most successful PGD service in the UK and performs over 200 cycles of PGD per year (2011 data). The PGD team at GSTT has also invented the revolutionary 'pre-implantation genetic haplotyping' technique, which has enabled them to develop a tailor-made test for a very wide range of serious genetic conditions

The event received wide and positive media coverage.
